Ice Cream Fried
Ice Cream Fried Dessert became a popular dessert in America because of Chi Chi’s restaurants. The origin of the dessert is debatable. But, no matter who first introduced it, one thing we all can agree on is how delicious the dessert is! It is vanilla ice cream that is coated in a crispy shell and fried in oil. And, don’t forget to add some toppings like cream whipped, chocolate syrup, and caramel sauce, just to name a few options!
Ingredients
Ice Cream: For this recipe, I used vanilla ice cream. However, you are free to use your preferred kind!
To help the coating stick, whisk together the egg whites and use them to cover the ice cream balls.
Coating: To make the coating, combine vanilla wafers, cornflake cereal, and cinnamon.
Oil: For frying, vegetable oil is ideal.
When frying, how does the ice cream not melt?
The ice cream is deep-fried and never melts! What causes this to happen? Freezing it twice helps the ice cream firm and freeze up even more. Also, make sure the ice cream balls are big enough to endure a few seconds in the hot oil.
Can I Use Different Ice Cream Flavors?
Yes! The wonderful part about this dessert is that you can make it with a variety of ice cream flavors. Don’t restrict yourself to vanilla flavors! Please let me know if you try another flavor and how it goes.
Is it possible to prepare this dessert in an air fryer?
Yes! To create this dessert in an air fryer, follow the directions up to the point when you’re supposed to fried it in oil. Instead, use aluminum foil to line the basket of your air fryer and warm it to 400°F. Then, depending on the size of your air fryer, work in batches to insert the coated ice cream balls into the basket. Cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
This isn’t as attractive, but it’s still delicious.
What Kinds of Toppings Are Available?
Try several alternative toppings for the dish in addition to cream whipped, chocolate, and caramel! Strawberry syrup is also a tasty option. You may also pour some honey on top, throw some cherries in there, and don’t forget the sprinkles!
Is it possible to prepare this dessert ahead of time?
Although best served fresh, right after frying, you can store the Ice Cream Fried. Just place them in the freezer to be enjoyed later. However, they will not be as crispy when served. You could also store the coated balls of ice cream before frying for up to a month in the freezer.

- 1 quart ice cream, vanilla
- 30 wafers vanilla
- 50g corn flake cereal (212 cup)
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon powder
- 3 big whisked egg whites
- 2 quarts oil (vegetable) for frying
Toppings (Optional)
- cream whipped
- warm fudge
- honey
- cherries
- sprinkles
- caramel
-
8 square sheets of plastic wrap, about 8 inches wide For each scoop of ice cream, stack two papers.
-
Scoop out a one-cup portion of ice cream using an ice cream scoop. Place the ice cream in the middle of the plastic wrap and gather the edges at the top. To form a tight barrier around the ice cream, twist the plastic wrap around it. Form the ice cream into a ball with your hands.
-
In a 9×9-inch baking sheet, place the ice cream balls and freeze for 1 hour, or until hard.
-
Meanwhile, place vanilla wafers in a food processor. Process until the crumb is fine.
-
Pulse the corn flakes and cinnamon a few times in the food processor until they are pulverized. Some crumbs are OK. Fill a small basin halfway with the mixture.
-
Whisk the egg whites in a separate bowl.
-
Remove the ice cream balls from the freezer one at a time when ready. Take the plastic wrap off. Roll the ice cream ball in the egg whites first, then in the corn flake mixture. Roll in the egg whites and then in the corn flake mixture once more.
-
Return the covered ice cream ball to the 9×9-inch baking tray. Repeat with the remaining ice cream balls, freezing for another 4 hours or overnight. The ice cream should be very cold and solid.
-
Line a baking sheet or big dish with paper towels when ready to fry.
-
Heat the oil in a big, deep pot to 375 degrees F.
-
Remove the ice cream from the freezer once the oil is heated. Working one at a time, gently drop the ice cream balls into the heated oil using a slotted spoon. 5-10 seconds, or until golden brown
-
Remove the ice cream balls from the oil as quickly as possible and lay them on the baking sheet lined with paper towels.
-
Serve immediately for a little softer interior and a toasty exterior. Alternatively, freeze for another 10-15 minutes for a cool treat.
-
Top with Toppings (Optional).
