Let’s face it, there wouldn’t be any food without our amazing farmers and their families. They genuinely are some of THE finest individuals you’ll ever meet due of the long hours they put in, their work ethic, and the enthusiasm and love they have for what they do.
At the end of June, I got the chance to visit Iowa with a few other bloggers. We visited a soy farm, heard from soy specialists, and spoke with farmers there about their methods and sustainability. Additionally, we went to the Food Hall of the World Prize Laureates and prepared a variety of soy dishes (keep reading to find out what they were!). Naturally, we were able to consume it all as well!
In Collins, Iowa, Dave Struthers and his family own a farm. They divide their 1,100 acres between soy and maize production, yet just 3 people work on the whole farm! They grow 5,500 pigs and 33 cows each year, using the dung from both as fertilizer. You may not be aware that a tablespoon of dirt can contain more than a million bacteria.
Beginning in June, soybeans will be harvested in mid-October, and planting them too early puts the crop in risk of being destroyed by frost. Mother Nature may be quite unexpected, so they must be extremely conscious of this every year.
In between the plantings of other crops, rye is grown as a cover crop in part to reduce soil erosion, enhance soil quality, and control weeds. He utilizes the remaining plant material from the harvest of that cover crop as pig bedding.
I had the chance to speak with farmer Ethan Crow about soy in further detail at a dinner we went to on our last evening in Iowa. According to him, soy is a highly tough plant that can be produced in challenging circumstances. Sustainability is enhanced when a cover crop is grown before the soy.
Food Hall of the World Prize Laureates
We were given a tour of the World Food Prize Foundation’s home when we were in Iowa. It’s really fascinating and is known as the Nobel Prize of the food industry.
A stunning mural depicting Des Moines’ culinary and cultural heritage may be seen in the hall honoring previous winners.
You can see a stunning stained-glass dome with 7500 pieces as you go into the rotunda. Each of the rotunda’s four corners is devoted to one of the four grains that sustain civilization: grain corn Rice Soy
A sculpture showing the grain from root to fully developed plant can be found in each corner along with the name of the grain written in a different language. Everything is really amazing to behold. I strongly advise adding it on your list of things to do in Des Moines, Iowa, if you’re interested in food and agriculture!

Did you know that soybean oil makes up the majority of vegetable oils? Soybean oil will be mentioned as the only or main component when you check the ingredient list. Consuming around 1 12 teaspoons of soybean oil each day may lower your blood pressure and lower your chances of developing coronary heart disease!
Soybeans are a plant protein that is rich in fiber, folate, and phosphorus and is good for your heart. Soy is a fantastic alternative if you need protein and are following a certain diet since it is a high grade protein. Since we can’t make it, it is a complete protein that is necessary for our bodies.
According to Dr. Andreas Altemueller, a consultant for the United Soybean Board, there is a lot of worry about soy “because of the issue of allergenicity, in fact only certain of the products have a minor impact on a tiny fraction of the population.” The advantages of soy, such as its high-quality protein and widely useful oil, both of which have an FDA-approved health claim, need to be better understood.

Additionally, farmers LOVE to share their experiences and are more than happy to discuss their methods, what they do, and why they do it. What they go through and what it takes to feed both their family and us as customers would intrigue you. They put a lot of effort into making their farms sustainable, using the finest farming techniques they can to enhance their operations. They also do their utmost to be good stewards for their local communities and the area around them. Let’s face it, they are feeding their own families with the food they cultivate and the cattle they breed, so they want to provide us the greatest items they can. They also reside in an area where pesticides and fertilizers are sprayed, so you can be sure that they are very conscientious and worried about the health of individuals they care about.
Please give them a hug for me if you know one. Less than 2% of individuals are farmers, making them very remarkable people. They deserve to be lavished with ALL the love and admiration possible.
